Medxcel Facilities Management Director Design Integration in Indianapolis, Indiana

The Director Design Integration will be responsible for defining & leading Medxcel’s approach to integrated architecture, engineering and design development. The Director Design Integration in collaboration with the Director, Strategy Planning, will provide leadership & support to Medxcel’s design and engineering standards and specifications while monitoring planned Capital projects for compliance. A primary focus will be ensuring the overall effectiveness of facilities’ design and their alignment with the mission and strategy of Ascension Health &Medxcel. The Director Design Integration will model all aspects of professionalism with emphasis on establishing the system’s productive role in significant capital projects.

  • Responsible for direct leadership of design integration group

  • Represent Planning, Design, Construction and Energy in key initiatives

  • Chair or participate in executive PDC committees and workgroups

  • Lead department process improvement initiatives including alignment with Preconstruction, Construction Programs and Energy / Facilities Performance

  • Facilitate advancement of design development, procurement planning, and scope development

  • Develop best practices in support of effective project delivery including policy documents, coordinating internal audits, and define and document governance and "chain of command”

  • Co-Lead internal design and Engineering Reviews with Preconstruction

  • Participate and advise in Skyline / Strategic Project design reviews

  • Manage design exception review process

  • Determine and advise on use of 3rd party support to overall strategic goal

  • Advise on health, safety and financial risks

  • Coordinate a value-based approach to engineering which meets the needs of both capital management and the operations function of the business.

  • Ensure PDC / Energy is adhering to design standards, while balancing space and design to manage the cost of the building.

  • Provide continual support and input to update PDC’s design standards quarterly and continuously review design and construction projects against those standards.

  • Act as the primary liaison for all external professional service firms. Review applications for contracts and ensure all service firms meet Ascension standards on conduct, safety, and operating


  • Bachelor’s in Architecture, Engineering or related fiel required

  • Master’s in Architecture, Engineering, Business Administration or other related field preferred


  • 1 professional license or certification in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management or closely related field preferred

  • AIA, PE, CHFM, CHC preferred


  • 10+ years of healthcare design / engineering experience required

  • 15+ years of healthcare design / engineering experience preferred

  • Experience Managing associates in a matrix reporting structure preferred


  • Demonstrated Problem solving – identifying and resolving problems in a timely manner by gathering and skillfully analyzing information in a complex environment

  • Demonstrated Planning/organizing – prioritizing and planning work activities, uses time efficiently and develops realistic action plans 

  • Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills with ability to communicate across all levels of the organization, including technology, tools, and processes

  • Proven experience and proficiency with MS Office Suite

  • Demonstrated excellent leadership skills, including ability to manage associates in a matrix reporting structure  

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills – demonstrated ability to approach technical design and construction issues, identify alternative solutions, make recommendations, and present them in an easily understood manner

  • Demonstrated decisive judgment – ability to assess situations or circumstances and draw sound and objective conclusions

  • Accountability – ability to take responsibility for action and results

  • Proven ability to delegate tasks, follow up on assigned tasks and report on progress of work 

  • Proven ability to train others on technical components, applicable regulations, and internal procedures

  • Strong understanding of design / engineering and construction methods and philosophies pertaining to healthcare facilities

  • 25-50% travel required
