As a paid staff member, you will support our loyal Red Cross disaster volunteers who serve selflessly to provide a bridge of assistance until individuals and families can resume a normal life. Our disaster volunteers are the heart and soul of our mission to respond to emergencies and provide relief to victims of disasters. They serve in a number of capacities, including Disaster Action Team Member, Disaster Assessment, Caseworker, Mass Care Feeding, Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) Driver, Shelter Manager/Staff, Disaster Health Services and Disaster Mental Health.The North Central Division of American Red Cross is seeking a Division Disaster State Relationship Director. This position can be based out Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, or South Dakota. This position will work Monday - Friday with planned and unplanned evenings and/or weekends. You must be willing to work on call 24/7. A valid driver's license and good driving record is required to operate a Red Cross vehicle. All full time disaster employees must be willing and able to be deployed, as needed.At a state level and for multi regional purposes this position serves as the primary interface with government entities (federal, state and local), organizations, and other leadership entities in the field of emergency services, disaster policy and operations, and community resiliency. Ensures coordinated planning at the state level and with the FEMA regions.This position operates as a part of the process called Align with Government, which is one of the (five pillar / three core) processes of the Disaster Management Cycle. Specific functions of this position include: Government Partnerships - State level. This position works to perform these functions according to the direction provided by the Division Disaster Executive (DDE) and team leadership is provided by the Division Vice President (DVP). The position reports to the Division Disaster Executive and receives personnel development from the Division DisasterExecutive.Responsibilities: - At a state level and for multi regional purposes this position ensures there is a primary interface with government entities (federal, state and local), organizations, and other leadership entities in the field of emergency services, disaster policy and operations, and community resiliency. Ensures coordinated planning at the state level and with the FEMA regions.- Manage state government relationships; develops employee and volunteer leadership cadres to ensure state relationship activities are effective. - Serves as primary relationship manager to FEMA regions in the division.- Staff state emergency operation centers. Create and ensure primary POC to state government agencies.- Manage state government relationships by conducting joint planning, sharing information, exercising, and training; ensures key stakeholders in the state (state EMA, NGOS, Governor and Cabinet members etc.) are briefed and clearly understand the role of Red Cross; ensures that commitments made for Red Cross resources are understood and achievable.- Serves during times of disaster as the State and Federal interface for the division for any scale of disaster; Participates in a leadership role on larger operations regionally, division or nationwide.QualificationsEducation: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. Degree in emergency management, public administration, or organizational development preferred.Experience: Minimum seven+ years experience direction and leading large scale social service programs. Track record of leadership results in non-profit and /or for-profit organizations.Management Experience: Minimum five+ years of staff management experience. Demonstrated abilities in the following areas: Supervisory, ability to work with volunteers, coaching, training.Travel: May involve travel (25 - 50%)Skills and Abilities: Proven track record of collaboration, facilitation, leadership and partnership management. Additionally, this position requires ability for planning and public speaking. Individual must be customer-oriented and able to operate with an external focus and team orientation.Other Requirements: This position requires familiarity with program guidance; cell phone, laptop, internet cards, training, current information, and templates, and the following specific areas of knowledge:Red Cross programs and procedures:Volunteer managementCultural competencyEmergency management practicesCommunity relationsGovernment relationsPartnershipsDisaster technical expertiseEssential Functions/Physical Requirements:Depending on work assignment, may require ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; or the ability to stand, walk and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of up to 20 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read technical information. Overall mobility is essential. May include sitting for long periods of time, driving a vehicle and working under challenging conditions.Work Conditions:Work is performed indoors with some potential for exposure to safety and health hazards related to emergency services relief work. May travel and participate in meetings and conferences throughout chapter jurisdiction, state and Red Cross system. Because the Red Cross is a disaster response organization, staff may be asked to be on 24-hour call during period of major disaster.Apply now!
