Aerotek Cell Operator in Morristown, Indiana
Cell Operators at this company will be stationed at their own designated "Cell" and tasks with taking rubber products for the automotive industry through the production cycle. The process/steps are nearly identical regardless of which cell one is placed in.
Operator takes the " molding tool" the fills with raw material. The tool is a flat piece of metal with handles on each side, and includes 24-48 slots that candidates must fill with metal rings. This part is very repetitive, but simple. Candidates literally put rings of metal (maybe 1 inch diameter rings) onto these slots one by one.
Once all slots on the tool are prepared, the tool is "flipped" kind of like a pizza onto the machine. Once the tool is pulled into the machine, candidates begin filling the slots on the next molding tool, and so on and so on.
When the machine has done its part, and molded the finished rubber product onto the tool... candidates remove the mold tool from the machine and use an air brush to cool the product down.
Once cooled, operators flip the tool (like a pizza again..) to knock off the rubber parts that have been made onto a table/work station
Once the product (spark plug caps, steering column seal, filter seals) are onto the table the operator visually inspects them for small defects. Some of these products are very small (size of a quarter in diameter) so you must look closely. Air bubbles, rips in the rubber are two examples of potential defects.
Once inspected, the product that looks good is dumped into a bin (1000 count) and weighed. Once the correct weight is read the operator knows 1000 have been made, and moves on to the next bin.
Overall - The job is pretty simple, but repetitive and moves with some pace. At a given time, the operator has 2-3 tools or batches going at a time. One on the left side of the cell being filled with metal pieces, one in the machine getting molded into the rubber product, and one finished tool that is being inspected.
- There is a binder in each cell outlining the exact quality defects to look for. Operators use this to quality check the product after it is done.
- This is considered the "hardest" part of the job, or the thing that trips people up the most. Each operator will need to keep a shift log on paper at their work station that includes which operator ran the part, any basic maintenance or troubleshooting that was performed, tracker of scrap in the cell, track progress toward production goals, tracking of temperature of machine running, and tracking of the quality/specifications of the product being molded by the machine.

This company would prefer candidates will experience in automotive manufacturing, because they often have a "cell" structure, but someone in fast food could be good because the "cell" type is somewhat similar to the fast food industry where you are timed doing a repetitive job while standing up.
